Using Twitter in the classroom

As a teacher, you most likely have confiscated a cell phone from a student.

Whatever the reason they were using the phone, your school policy does not allow them to be used during school hours.

However, studies have certain apps on cell phones may improve student’s GPA. Twitter, a social media application that encourages discussion, has been used in studies across various classes to encourage engagement, discussion and research. While this was carried out at the college level, many school teachers (I follow on Twitter) have been using Twitter to enagage their students.

Results have shown that when Twitter has been mandatory and used to enhance learning, the students GPA in that class increases. While this is far from a scientific study, it’s important to note that engaging students in their medium of choice may encourage, and even improve, their learning.
